SEO for Small Businesses: Where to Start When You Have No Traffic
By We Are Heylo
Most small business owners know they should be doing SEO. Far fewer know where to actually start, especially when their site gets barely any organic traffic today.
The good news: you don't need a massive budget or a dedicated marketing team. You need a focused strategy and consistent execution.
Start with the foundations
Before you chase keywords, make sure your site isn't actively working against you:
- Site speed, if your pages take more than 3 seconds to load, fix that first. Google cares, and so do your visitors
- Mobile experience, more than 60% of searches happen on phones. Your site needs to work flawlessly on small screens
- Crawlability, make sure Google can actually find and index your pages. A broken sitemap or blocked robots.txt can silently kill your visibility
Target keywords you can actually win
Small businesses can't compete with enterprise companies for broad terms like "web design." Instead, go specific:
- Long-tail keywords like "web design for restaurants in Singapore" have less competition and higher intent
- Local keywords are often underserved, especially in markets like Singapore where many businesses haven't invested in SEO
- Question-based keywords like "how much does a website cost" attract people actively researching
Create content that earns its place
Every page on your site should exist for a reason. Ask yourself:
- Who is searching for this?
- What do they need to know?
- What should they do after reading?
If you can't answer those three questions, the page probably doesn't need to exist.
Build authority through consistency
SEO isn't a one-time project. The businesses that win at organic search are the ones that publish consistently, build genuine backlinks through quality work, and keep improving their site over time.
Start with one well-researched article per week. That's 52 pieces of content in a year, each one a new opportunity to rank.
Track what matters
Don't obsess over vanity metrics. Focus on:
- Organic traffic growth month over month
- Keyword rankings for your target terms
- Conversion rate from organic visitors to leads
If those three numbers are moving in the right direction, your SEO is working.
