How to Choose a Web Design Agency (Without Getting Burned)

By We Are Heylo

Choosing a web design agency is one of the most important decisions a growing business makes. Get it right and you have a partner that accelerates your growth. Get it wrong and you're left with a site that doesn't convert, a depleted budget, and months of wasted time.

Here's how to make a smart choice.

Look at their work, not their pitch

Every agency says they're "strategic" and "results-driven." Ignore the buzzwords. Instead:

  • Review their portfolio, does the work feel considered and original, or do all their sites look the same?
  • Check the live sites, are they fast? Do they work on mobile? Is the copy sharp or generic?
  • Look for range, can they handle different industries and challenges, or do they have a rigid template?

Understand who you'll actually work with

Many agencies sell with senior staff and deliver with juniors. Ask directly:

  • Who will be my day-to-day contact?
  • Who makes the design decisions?
  • Will I work with the same people throughout the project?

At smaller studios, you often work directly with the people doing the work. That means faster decisions, fewer miscommunications, and a better end result.

Ask about their process

A good agency has a clear process they can explain without jargon. Red flags include:

  • No discovery phase, if they're designing before they understand your business, the result will be generic
  • No defined milestones, "we'll figure it out as we go" means scope creep and budget overruns
  • No post-launch plan, a website isn't finished when it goes live. Ask what happens after launch

Check their technical ability

A beautiful design that loads slowly, breaks on mobile, or tanks your SEO is worse than useless. Ask about:

  • Performance, do they optimise for Core Web Vitals?
  • SEO, is technical SEO built into their process, or bolted on at the end?
  • Accessibility, do they build for all users, or just the ones using the latest MacBook?

Trust your gut on communication

Pay attention to how the agency communicates during the sales process. That's the best version of their communication you'll ever see. If they're slow to respond, vague on details, or dismissive of your questions now, it only gets worse once the contract is signed.

Price isn't everything

The cheapest quote is almost never the best value. A well-built site that converts visitors into customers will pay for itself many times over. A cheap site that nobody can find or use is expensive at any price.

Invest in quality. Your business deserves it.
